MLS All-Star Game or Tech Expo?
MLS will provide a glimpse of what soccer will be for the humble fan as they host the 'Future of Soccer Showcase' in what promises to be an exciting yet uncertain future?
As part of the fun and frolics going on in Columbus for the MLS All-Star Game, Major League Soccer (MLS) will host the "Future of the Game Showcase" during the game itself this evening at Lower.com Field. It will feature live demonstrations of “groundbreaking technologies” that are poised to “transform the sport”. Here’s hoping that “transform” isn’t a euphemism for “ruin the game”.
Key Technologies on Display:
FitTogether: MLS All-Stars will wear next-generation GPS vests for precise player tracking.
Sportlight: A LIDAR system using lasers and radar to capture comprehensive match data.
Sportec Solutions: Skeletal tracking for broadcasts and fans, plus a semi-automated offside system for future MLS use.
Immersiv.io: A mixed reality experience blending game video and statistics.
Camb.AI: Real-time AI dubbing of broadcasts into any language.
MLS/TECH: Early glimpses of generative AI capabilities for fan engagement and personalized experiences.
adidas Connected Ball: The All-Star Game will be the first MLS event to utilize the Connected Ball with embedded sensors for real-time data capture.
Undoubtedly, some of these are going to be rather interesting to play around with, especially if you’re watching on your lonesome. The Immersive.io stuff in particular:
It’s quite easy to get distracted, or focus on other screens while watching on your own as you want a connection that you miss from having mates round or going to the game itself.
If it can solve / cater to that then it could very well be a winner. Well that and an Apple Vision Pro costing less than $3,500, obviously.
Anyway, you can slum it, and watch the All-Star Game, along with the rest of us plebs tonight on Apple TV, albeit without Messi.
